POSITION SUMMARY:\
This direct care role is considered a professional role with direct responsibility for patient outcomes related to airway issues. Flexibility is vital to perform duties in all areas of care, including all age-specific categories and specialties. The incumbent of this position will work with patients in all areas of the hospital. The incumbent of this position must also have the ability to effectively communicate using written, verbal, and non-verbal methods. The incumbent must demonstrate flexibility, receptiveness, self-confidence, and initiative. He/she must demonstrate open mindedness.\

The incumbent is responsible for treating clients requiring respiratory therapy services at University Medical Center New Orleans (UMCNO). The employee's shift may vary to ensure adequate coverage for the shifts of a department which operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This position requires knowledge of the evaluation and treatment techniques necessary to properly care for respiratory patients. The respiratory care team works as a vital component of patient care services. This position receives broad supervision from the shift Lead Therapist or higher-level management.\

JOB REQUIREMENTS:\
\
Education: \
High School Diploma or equivalent. Graduate of a respiratory care education program.\
\
License/Certification:\
American Heart Association Basic Life Support-BLS and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)\
Active License issued by the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners (LSBME)\
\
Credentialed by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) as a Certified Respiratory Therapist or Registered Respiratory Therapist.\
\
POSITION DUTIES: \
\
Ensures that all patient care orders are done and documented according to UMCNO Policy and Procedure, performing all functions with minimal supervision:\
Performs and assesses patients in assigned areas and provides consultation to health care team members.\
Performs bedside reports in all critical care units.\
Performs all conventional modes of respiratory therapy, mechanical ventilation and patient support measures under direct orders from UMCNO physicians.\
Verifies all physician orders and interventions prior to beginning therapy.\
Documents according to UMCNO policy, including response of patient treatment and follow up.\
Documents care provided including but not limited to ventilator set-up, ventilator checks, aerosol treatments, CPT, tracheotomy care, ETT retape, 02 transport, and pulse ox checks. Enter appropriate charges. Complete and accurate information is required for billing and productivity purposes.\
Performs arterial line insertions and direct sticks.\
Performs blood gas analysis.\
Responsibilities include the safe transport and storage of oxygen.\
Participates in Performance Improvement activities including National Patient Safety\
Goals such as, hand washing and two patient identifiers, maintenance and safe use of equipment/supplies -medication management -focus audits for identified opportunities for improvement.\
Documents in daily logs equipment maintenance (SST) and Quality Assurance checks.\
Completes medical variance or appropriate incident report forms for missed medications and treatments or unusual events in incident reporting system. Monitors economical use of supplies and equipment -reports identified needs to appropriate personnel.\
Maintains records to assure proper patient charging for supplies, services and medications, including proper use of medication management systems used for the safe administration of medications.\
Assist other health care team members with patient care activities within the scope of practice acting as patient advocate at all times:\
Actively seeks opportunities to improve patient service, including maintenance of a clean, quiet environment\
Accepts responsibilities and duties of the all codes and activations as assigned by the Respiratory Therapy Department\
Accepts additional duties as assigned for the overall benefit of UMCNO.\
Assumes the role of Lead Therapist in the absence of a supervisor or as assigned.\
